Aylesbury Library, located on Walton Street, have kindly created a display of photo's and memorabilia from our match against England. The match provided Bobby Robson with a warm up fixture ahead of the European Championships and was the official opening of our Buckingham Road stadium.
The fixture came about with the help of Frank McGhee, Sports Writer for the Guardian newspaper and saw England Manager Bobby Robson field a full strength side including Gary Lineker, Bryan Robson, John Barnes and Peter Shilton. Frank told the story in the program as to how it took 18 months and a close relationship with Bobby Robson who eventually agreed after England defeated Yugoslavia in November 1987 to qualify.
It came shortly after we had secured promotion on goal difference earning a vital point away to Rugby and enabled Trevor Gould and the players the opportunity to show off the Championship shield to a bumper crowd. Funds raised went towards upgrading the stadium ready for our one and only season at the top level of the non-league football pyramid.
Whilst we may have lost 7:0, stand out moments included the Hercy free kick routine, supporters in the tree's and as with all big sporting events in the 80's, a streaker. We were the envy of non-league football and the game is as surreal today as it was on the 4th June 1988.
