After a 3-0 defeat on the road at Ware FC, Aylesbury United return to The Meadow on Wednesday evening, welcoming league leaders Winslow United. This will be a stern test against one of the divisions standout performers this season.
Known as the Ploughmen, Winslow United are one of Buckinghamshire's oldest clubs, having been founded in 1891, and have emerged as genuine promotion contenders this term. Playing their home matches at Elmfields Gate, Winslow arrive at Chesham sitting top of the table and full of confidence after an excellent start to the campaign. The visitors have collected 30 points from their opening 13 league matches, losing just once all season. Their record of nine wins, three draws and one defeat has seen them establish themselves at the summit, while their return of 35 goals scored is among the best in the division.
Recent weeks have highlighted exactly why Winslow are such a threat. Victories over Didcot Town, Welwyn Garden City, Biggleswade, Biggleswade Town and Flackwell Heath have underlined their promotion credentials, while their current form of W-D-W-D-W demonstrates their consistency that has driven them to the top of the standings.
Goals have certainly not been in short supply. Winslow score an average of nearly three goals per game this season and have produced some eye-catching score lines along the way, including a 6-0 win over London Lions and a 5-0 success against Concord Rangers.
However, there may be some encouragement for the Ducks. While Winslow have been prolific going forward, they can be vulnerable at the back. A remarkable 4-4 draw with Stotfold and a 3-3 draw against Marlow showed that opponents have been able to create chances against them, while their only league defeat came away to Milton Keynes Irish who Aylesbury United beat 4-3.
Wednesday's meeting sees Aylesbury United take on the division's pacesetters, with the visitors arriving in excellent form and looking to strengthen their grip on top spot. The Ducks, meanwhile, will be hoping home advantage can help them produce a result against one of the league's most dangerous attacking sides.
The Ducks have endured a difficult first half of the campaign but have continued to show determination and resilience in difficult circumstances. With supporters behind them on home soil, they will be aiming to upset a Winslow side that has lost only once in the league this season. For the visitors, the objective is clear: maintain their excellent form and strengthen their position at the summit.
For Aylesbury, it represents another opportunity to measure themselves against the division's pacesetters and potentially claim a result that could act as a catalyst for the weeks ahead.
